- The Centre for Experimental Constructive Mathematics (CECM) at 5imon Fraser University (Burnaby, Canada) is mandated to explore the interplay of emerging network and information technologies with traditional mathematics. We are interested in incorporating various supporting technical mechanisms and facilities into a single coherent computational, networking environment which will support the contributions, collaboration and interaction between mathematics researchers, educators and students, and with industry and the commercial sector. The Organic Mathematics Project (OMP) represents the first phase of development under CECM's involvement in the Network Centre of Excellence-TeleLeaming. The end product is the digital version of the Proceedings of the Workshop on Organic Mathematics, originally held on December 12 to 14, 1995 at Simon Fraser University. The Web-based publication has been formed around a core of extant published articles on experimental and computational matbematics and includes enhancements by the original authors (all of whom participated in the workshop) in the form of commentaries, reflections, appendices, activated mathematical exercises and illustrations, biographies and personal information. Of greatest interest is the 'activated' mathematics; the otherwise static text has been processed (both mechanically and manually) to connect it to mathematical software interfaces, providing the reader with an interactive environment that supports contribution and exploration. The authors J. and B. Borwein, R. Corless and L. Jorgenson are the editors and organisers of both the Workshop and the proceedings. Their experiences are documented herein. Reflections and insights into the issues related to thiS process proVide the focus for the current phase of development, now being led by author S. Brabam.
